Firefox nears 30% market share in Europe

Gains five percentage points in 2007, says French metrics company
Mozilla Corp.'s Firefox browser finished 2007 with nearly 30% of the European browser market, a French Web metrics company reported today.
The open-source browser's average European market share improved five percentage points during the year in the 32 European countries tracked by XiTi Monitor, a Web measurement site operated by Applied Technologies Internet in Merignac, France. Firefox's gains in Europe, as elsewhere, came at the expense of Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer.

Still, the upstart browser remained a distant second to Microsoft Internet Explorer, which ended the year with 66% of the market, according to Web metrics firm XiTi Monitor.
Mozilla Firefox gained nearly 5% of the European Web browser market last year, ending 2007 with a 28% share, a Web metrics firm reported Tuesday.
Despite the increase in use among Web surfers, Firefox remained a distant second to Microsoft's Internet Explorer, which ended the year with 66% of the market, the French firm XiTi Monitor reported. The final number for IE represented a 1% drop from November.
