Internet Graybeard vs. Governments: Vint Cerf on internet regulation

These are anxious days for Vint Cerf. Best known as one of the fathers of the Internet, this dapper, bright-eyed sexagenarian computer scientist worries that governments are trying to lay their controlling hands on his progeny, which until now grew and flourished unhampered by regulation.

The freedom the Internet has had to evolve over the past three decades according to the demands of its users and the business community is the secret of its success, Mr. Cerf argues.

"But we have to be very thoughtful that we don't kill the goose that's been laying golden eggs," says Mr. Cerf. At worst, users around the globe could in future see more content barred at governments' whims and pay models similar to those for telephony could be in the offing.
