European telco groups set up smartphone panel

European telecoms groups have launched a fresh broadside against Apple and Google by setting up an expert panel to monitor the development of mobile phone operating systems.

The European mobile operators are concerned at the potential for unfair practices in the fast-growing smartphone market, and their expert panel may make reports to the European Commission.

Citing people close to the operators -- Vodafone, Telefonica, Telecom Italia, France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom -- the FT said rapid advances made by Google's smartphone operating system, Android, and Apple's iOS platform were a focus of concern.
