Europe's main human rights and security body told Turkey on Tuesday to stop blocking Google's video-sharing website YouTube and thousands of other sites banned under its internet law.

The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) said the law, introduced in 2007, has been expanded to bar over 5,000 sites in the past two years and is severely damaging freedom of expression and information rights.

The OSCE said Tuesday it had written to the Turkish government to urge it to lift recent restrictions on Internet websites like YouTube and reform a strict law curbing Internet access.

"I am alarmed by the decision of the Turkish Telecommunications Communication Presidency to block access to dozens of Internet Protocol addresses related to YouTube and Google services," the OSCE's media freedom representative Dunja Mijatovic wrote to Turkey's Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.
