Kurdish People To Seek Own gTLD

A Kurdish company is proposing to apply for the .KURD or .KUR generic Top Level Domain to represent the 35 million Kurdish people around the world when ICANN begins to take applications for new gTLDs, according to a report in Domain Incite.
Of those 35 million Kurdish people, a large number live in Iran and Iraq, while there are also 14 million Kurdish people in Turkey.
The proposal is being driven by Aras Noori, a German resident. Noori wrote to ICANN's CEO and president Rod Beckstrom in April 2010 advising of the launch of the proposal to apply for either .KURD or .KUR - the Kurdish community, according to Noori, has not yet decided on which gTLD to apply for.
In his letter Noori notes "a domain extension for the Kurdish people has been a dream of many communities like ZKURD , KurdITgroup , KOSC and others. We, with support of many Kurdish groups and communities are committed in making a domain extension available for Kurd people."
